Our Vineyards

Located just off the beach, in Bay View, Napier the vineyard has the benefit of being frost free. This has proved to produce fruit of consistent quality, even in years that may be marginal for other prime grape growing sites in Hawke’s Bay. The soil consists of sandy loam over Esk River shingle, providing good drainage and relatively low fertility. The coastal location ensures a long ripening season with early budburst and a harvest often later than usual to ensure fully matured fruit. Any vintage fluctuations are minimised by the plantings of several different clones for each variety. The vineyard is trained in 2 and 4 cane VSP and the Scott Henry system.

The total vineyard area comprises of 32 acres.

The varieties grown are:

  • Sauvignon Blanc
  • Chardonnay
  • Pinot Noir
  • Syrah
  • Merlot
  • Malbec
  • Cabernet Franc
  • Muscat

The Puriri Tree

The Hawkes Bay vineyard is the home of our iconic Puriri Tree which lends its name to our mid range of wines.

This Puriri tree is over 100 years old and though it is not native to the Hawkes Bay area it has been carefully tended over the years and now thrives between the vines and provides a wonderful shady spot for the vineyard staff to lunch out of the heat of the Hawkes Bay sun. Native tui and bellbirds are frequent visitors to the tree and their song can regularly be heard as they feed upon both the Puriri fruit and the nectar from its flowers.

Our Te Puriri range carries the name of this magnificent native tree, which watches over the many vintages of the wines bearing its name.
